THE STORY SO FAR...

“The Gorillaz of rock music.”

That’s a fair description used by one music industry exec when talking about The Imperfected, an ongoing musical project from producer/bassist Chris Catero that includes an ever changing group of collaborators. The traditional “band” usually has one or two individuals who drive it, like Jagger and Richards, the Young brothers, Page, Iommi, Tyler and Perry... While The Imperfected certainly isn’t traditional, nor really a “band” in the conventional sense, Catero definitively is the artist driving this musical bus.

“I’ve been really blessed to have known, played and worked with some really talented musicians and writers over the years. So, with The Imperfected my thought was to put together something where I could create music solely by myself or involve lots of different people," says Catero. "And something where I can constantly put out music, whatever it may be, under one flag. It’s rock n roll but it’s not premeditated nor completely predictable. The idea is to organically create some cool music that highlights the uniqueness of those involved.”

“One of the things I’ve always questioned is the seeming need for someone to put an artist in a tiny little musical box. I’ve always admired artists that opted to live outside of that construct, and it was part of the goal here."

For The Imperfected it's all about musical inspiration, and of course embracing the beauty of imperfection. The mantra is simple - keep it real, keep it organic. Go for vibe, don't overthink it. No A.I. here. Humans creating farm to table music. And while rock fans still wanna rock, they're now more broad and multigenerational. Playlists have bred eclectic tastes, with listeners embracing a wider spectrum of music compiled together. Today's independent artists secure placement on playlists with far greater ease than when they were completely stifled by corporate homogeneity. The audience in turn now finds more new music than ever before. And with a far more open ear. The Imperfected fits right in.

Catero himself wears multiple hats in the music business, among them being an artist, session player, producer, songwriter and videographer/graphic artist. In the past he’s shot pics and written articles for music media outlets, done arena marketing, and was the marketing/sales/artist relations person for the notable former guitar amplification manufacturer Krank Amplification. He currently creates music for production music libraries as well as doing at-hire mixing and live performance. Having been part of the bands Wardog and Razer as well as a hired gun for the likes of guitar virtuoso Marty Friedman and Dokken's Wild Mick Brown, Catero in recent years had somewhat settled into more of a behind the scenes role with his other skill sets. However a hard drive that was filling up with unused song ideas initially tagged for library client projects eventually sparked the artist in him to “scratch that itch”.

“In the library music world almost all the music I write ends up being owned by the library. It’s the nature of the biz. And it’s very specific music I get tasked to create. But as an artist I can not only make music I really want to do but also then have a catalog of songs I solely own that I can simply license for use. It’s hard to make money on music itself today, but “syncs” (the term used for music that is synchronized to image, i.e. music you would hear in a show or movie) are still one way an artist can do it. Over the years I had accumulated a lot of really interesting musical ideas sitting on a hard drive that just weren’t right for whatever client project I was on. So it made sense to me to cherry pick some of these cool ideas and turn them into something. And then in turn have a vehicle that was not only me getting back to the joy of creating music I wanted to make, but simultaneously giving me my own catalog in the sync music world.” Thus The Imperfected was born.

So far so good. Over the last few years The Imperfected has steadily put out a wide swath of rock tunes that has certainly defied labeling. And with a multitude of talent contributing to the sonic brew. From sweltering blues rock to slamming rock grooves, to even twisted orchestrally bombastic sci fi, it’s been quite the ride. “It’s been what I hoped it would be, and now that I’ve been at it for a while the list of people who want to collaborate has grown quite a bit,” says Catero. “There’s lots of exciting stuff coming up with some great musicians involved. Stay tuned!”
